In
front on the house stands a Cairn which was built by local Freemasons
to commemorate the Millennium. In searching for the
appropriate symbol to mark the Millennium, the Friends of
Marcus Humphrey House came to the conclusion that a particularly
Scottish landmark was not only relevant but eminently
suitable.
Over countless years throughout our country Masons
have erected Cairns on top of mountains and on significant
sites to mark and honour achievement. Two Brethren from Lodge
Craigends 1042, volunteered to draw up the working plans,
build the Cairn and provide a suitably inscribed plaque. |

The
external appearance of the Cairn amply demonstrates the skill
of the workmanship, but as with so much Masonic Symbolism, it
is what is inside that counts.
The Secretary of the Friends of Marcus Humphrey House was
responsible for collecting the artifacts and sealing them in a
capsule. We know that a 'Mark Token' from each of the Lodges
within the Provinces of Argyll and the Isles, Ayrshire,
Dumfriesshire, Dunbartonshire, Galloway, Glasgow, Kilwinning,
Lanarkshire Middle Ward, Lanarkshire Upper Ward, Renfrewshire
East and Renfrewshire West was deposited. No doubt there will
be many other contemporary items which at this stage are known
only to the Secretary, but will be revealed in one hundred
years time.
Why one hundred years? Quite simply the Brethren of
2000 wished to leave a legacy to the Brethren of tomorrow. It
is clearly inscribed on the plaque, "The internal
Millennium capsule should not be opened before April
2100."
