GRAND
MASTER MASON CONDUCTS CEREMONY IN JOHNSTONE |
17 March 2012 |
|
The Most
Worshipful Grand Master Mason, Bro. Charles Iain Robert
Wolrige Gordon of Esslemont installed Bro. John Samual
Miller as the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master of
Renfrewshire on Saturday, 17th March 2012.
A total of 371 Brethren from Grand Lodge, Sister Provincial
Grand Lodges, the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire
East along with visitors from the Sister Constitutions of
England, Ireland, Canada and India attended the impressive
ceremony held in Johnstone Town Hall, Renfrewshire.
Following the opening and raising of PGLRE by the Immediate
Past Provincial Grand Master Bro. David A. Reid, a
Deputation of Sister Provincial Grand Lodges headed by the
RWPGM of Renfrewshire West, Bro. James W. Miller was
received. Provincial Grand Lodges from all over Scotland
were represented from as far as Ross and Cromarty, Fife and
Kinross, Argyll and the Isles, Aberdeen and Galloway.
The Grand Master Mason and Grand Office-Bearers were then
received. The GMM received the Emblem of Authority and
assumed the Chair. The Provincial Grand Wardens vacated
their chairs in favour of the Grand Wardens and the Grand
Director of Ceremonies retired to escort the Provincial
Grand Master into Provincial Grand Lodge.
The ceremony of Installing Bro. John S. Miller as Provincial
Grand Master then took place followed by the presentation
and obligation of the Commissioned Office-Bearers: DPGM
Bro. Andrew Hosie, SPGMs Bro. Neil Fraser, Bro. Iain McPhee
and Bro. William Fleming, Provincial Grand Secretary, Bro.
Grant MacLeod and Provincial Grand Chaplains, Bro. Reverend
John McConnell, Bro. Pastor William Shirlaw and Bro.
Reverend Robert Craig.
A Roll of Lodges in the Province was then called with
members of each Lodge rising in turn to salute the PGM.
In an address to the newly installed PGM, the Grand Master
Mason congratulated him and urged him to work to achieve the
missions and goals he had set and to be proud of
Freemasonry.
In reply, the PGM thanked Grand Lodge for the excellent
ceremony and paid tribute to his predecessor Bro. David A.
Reid who had left the Province in such good heart.
During the Installation Dinner that followed, Brethren were
entertained by the recitation of Burns’ poetry by Catrina
Fleming, daughter of SPGM Bill Fleming.
In his after dinner speech, the Grand Master Mason praised
PGLRE for their on-going work in Masonic education. He also
spoke of his recent visit to the Caribbean where Scottish
Freemasonry flourishes. He also revealed that a £75,000
contribution from Scottish Lodges to the Haiti Earthquake
Appeal was to be used to build a new medical centre.
He went on to say that Freemasons should be proud of their
charity work and other achievements. For example when
celebrations were being planned for anniversaries of
historic buildings the public should be reminded of the part
Masons had played in the laying of their foundation stones.

Leadership
Seminar |
18 February
2012 |
|
A Seminar on
Leadership designed to assist Brethren who aspire to the
Chair of their Lodge and those who simply wish to be better
equipped to make a greater contribution to Lodge affairs was
held at the premises of Lodge Nitshill No.1478 on Saturday,
18th February.
More than 30
Brethren plus the Commissioned Office Bearers attended the
Seminar opened by Bro. John Miller PGM and led by Bro. Neil
Fraser SPGM. It was the first such event undertaken by the
new Commission.
It was
encouraging to see every office from IG to IPM being
represented as well as a large number of PMs demonstrating
that even the most experienced Masons have to capacity and
desire to learn.
The Seminar
concentrated on various aspects of leadership, but Bro. Neil
also touched on Coaching Skills and said that Mentoring is a
topic to be considered more fully in a future Seminar.
Bro. Neil
said that he was very pleased by the positive feedback from
the Brethren attending and he considered this sort of
informal learning experience helped to break down perceived
barriers between PGL and Brethren in the Province and
provide the opportunity for people to air their views.
PGM, Bro.
John Miller congratulated Bro. Neil for his work in
preparing and delivering the Seminar and confirmed his
commitment to Masonic Education across the Province
including future Seminars covering other aspects of training
and development designed to assist individual Brethren, and
consequently the Lodges, in ongoing and important work as
Freemasons.

PGM DAVID A.
REID BOWS OUT WITH A BANG |
28 January
2012 |
|
RWPGM Bro.
David A. Reid chaired the Annual Meeting and Installation of
Office-Bearers of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire
East on Saturday, 28 January 2012 – his final official duty
before demitting office.
Near the end
of the ceremony a series of explosions were clearly heard by
Brethren within Lodge Prince of Wales No.426 in Queen
Street, Renfrew. However, it was quickly ascertained that
these were caused by a firework display to celebrate the
re-opening of the refurbished Renfrew Town Hall and not –
appropriate though it might have been - to mark the end of
the PGM’s era!
Earlier,
following the constitution and opening of Provincial Grand
Lodge, a Deputation of Sister Provincial Grand Lodges of
Ayr, Galloway, Glasgow, Stirlingshire and Kilwinning headed
by RWPGM Bro. James Miller of the Provincial Grand Lodge of
Renfrewshire West and a Deputation from Grand Lodge headed
by RWPDGM Bro. Archibald M. McGown were admitted and
welcomed by PGM Bro. David A. Reid.
Eulogies were
given in respect of Bro. William Ferguson PM of Lodge
Inchinnan No.1405, Bro. George Dickson PM of Lodge Craigends
No.1042 and Bro. Alexander Anderson PM of Lodge The Royal
Stuart No.1414.
The
Installation of Provincial Grand Lodge Office-Bearers was
undertaken by Provincial Grand Master Designate Bro. John S.
Miller. Following the ceremony PGM Bro. David A. Reid
presented Bro. Edward Chamberlain with a Past Provincial
Grand Warden’s Apron and thanked him warmly for his diligent
work.
Bro. John C.
Stevenson PM of Lodge Renfrew County Kilwinning No.370, Bro.
Ronnie Fraser PM of Lodge McLaren No.1688 and Bro. Jimmy
Laing of Lodge Union & Crown No.307 were then given the
honorary positions of Provincial Grand Treasurer, Provincial
Grand Secretary and Provincial Grand Tyler respectively and
presented with certificates by PGM Bro. David A. Reid who
thanked them for their contributions to their Lodges and the
Province.
Past
Provincial Grand Master Bro. Dixon J. Drye thanked the PGM
for all the work he had put in over the past five years,
congratulated him on his appointment as Grand Inner Guard
and wished him every success in the future.
In his closing
remarks, PGM Bro. David A. Reid spoke of his journey in
Freemasonry to the present and recalled that one of his
finest experiences had been to officiate as PGM at the 50th
Anniversary of Lodge Douglas No.1557, his Mother Lodge and
the Lodge of which his father had been a Founder Member.
At the close
of the ceremony representatives of the six charities chosen
to receive money under the 2011 Caring and Sharing Fund were
invited into the Lodge with the Brethren in full regalia.
They were then each presented with a cheque for £1700 – the
equal division of £6000 raised in the Province augmented by
a £4200 donation from Grand Lodge.
The Harmony
that followed, enjoyed by representatives of the charities,
was on a Burns Night theme with a haggis piped in by
Provincial Grand Piper Bro. George Paul, poems recited by
SPGM Bro. Bill Fleming and a spirited version of Tam
O’Shanter by Provincial Grand Treasurer, Bro. Clark Leiper.

Christmas
Parcels |
December 2011 |
|
Generous
Freemasons in the Province of Renfrewshire East have raised
more than £50,000 for charity in the past year with £43,000
of that going to non-Masonic charities.
But it’s the
tradition of providing Christmas parcels that means the most
in terms of community involvement for the members of the 37
lodges in an area that stretches from Cardonald in Glasgow
to Loch Winnoch and East Kilbride to Erskine.
This year
around 800 parcels of seasonal groceries – essentials and
luxuries – were sourced, bought, packed, collected and
personally delivered by Freemasons to those who, for one
reason or another, are facing hardship.
The present
scheme was started 30 years ago by Past Depute Grand Master
Bro. Archie McGown to replace a small scale arrangement of
seasonal parcel distribution that had been operating
previously within the Province. Bro .Archie commented: “I’m
delighted this scheme has prospered and grown over the years
with so many Freemasons involved in a process of true
community spirit.”
Nowadays the
operation – organised on this occasion by Provincial Grand
Master Designate, Bro. John Miller - began with items being
specially selected and bought from Morrisons stores that
allow a generous discount. A team of more than 40
Freemasons gathered at Lodge Inchinnan No.1405, where the
goods were delivered, then swung into action to pack the
parcels with assembly-line precision in a record-breaking 35
minutes. The parcels were then hand-delivered to the homes
of recipients.
The people
who receive the parcels are chosen by Lodge almoners – often
they are widows, the house-bound or families who just need a
bit of extra help.
Bunty
Morton, a widow from Inchinnan, was handed her parcel by
Bro. Harry McDonagh, Right Worshipful Master of the local
lodge. She said: “While the contents of the parcels are
much appreciated, it’s the knowledge that people care that’s
important.”
Later Bro.
Harry travelled to nearby Erskine Hospital to visit Bro. Jim
Methven (in bed) and Bro. Gordon McKenzie for a chat and
hand over Christmas parcels.
The
Provincial Grand Master of Renfrewshire East, Bro. David A.
Reid, said: “So far as I am aware we are the only Province
in Scotland to run such a scheme. It’s a great way for
Lodges to keep in contact with members of the community who
need a wee bit of help and appreciate the personal touch of
a knock at the door and a chat.”

BRO. JOHN
SAMUEL MILLER CONFIRMED AS PGM DESIGNATE
The
announcement that Bro. John S. Miller has been confirmed as
Provincial Grand Master Designate of Renfrewshire East was
warmly welcomed by Brethren at the Provincial Grand Lodge
Communication held at Lodge Eaglesham No.1265 on Friday, 28
October.
It was also
announced that at the Regular Communication of the Grand
Lodge of Scotland the previous day it had been confirmed
that the present PGM of Renfrewshire East, Bro. David A.
Reid is to become Grand Inner Guard.
Other
announcements emanating from Grand Lodge involved news that
Bro. William “Bud” Gauld, currently Grand Marshal, was to
become Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies and that SPGM
Bro. Andrew Hosie had been re-elected to Grand Committee for
a further year.
PGM Designate
Bro. John Miller told the meeting at Lodge Eaglesham – the
first time that Lodge has ever hosted a PGLRE Communication
– that is was a great honour and that he looked forward to
leading the Province over the next five years when he takes
office in February 2012.
He revealed
that Bro. Andrew Hosie had agreed to take the role of Depute
Provincial Grand Master and that Bro. William Fleming had
accepted a five-year commission as Substitute Provincial
Grand Master. Existing SPGMs Bro. Neil Fraser and Bro. Iain
McPhee have both accepted commissions for five-year terms.
Bro. Grant
McLeod and Bro. Hugh Cattigan are to take over as Provincial
Grand Secretary and Assistant Provincial Grand Secretary
respectively in place of Bro. Evans Reid and Bro. Ronnie
Fraser, neither of whom had wished to be considered for the
posts they currently hold.
To complete
what he described as a “very strong team”, the PGM Designate
said that Provincial Grand Treasurer, Bro. Clark Leiper, and
Provincial Grand Almoner, Bro. Colin McCartney, would remain
in post and Bro. Robert Craig would join the Bro. Rev. John
McConnell and Bro Pastor William Shirlaw as a third
Provincial Grand Chaplain.
PGM Bro. David
A. Reid announced that a total of £6000 had been raised
during this year’s Caring and Sharing Fund initiative
through a series of events including sponsored walks, gala
nights and the sale of special charters to Lodges.
It was agreed
that £1000 be donated to each of six nominated non-Masonic
charities with any additional sums allocated by Grand Lodge
divided between Yorkhill Childrens’ Foundation and Beatson
Oncology – the two charities that had proved the most
popular choices of Lodges throughout the Province.
It was also
agreed at the suggestion of the PGM that representatives of
all the charities be invited to a special presentation
ceremony – with Brethren in full regalia - at the PGLRE
annual meeting at Lodge Prince of Wales No.426 in January.
The PGM also
announced that plans were well advanced for the Education
Dinner on 18 May 2012. The Grand Master Mason of Scotland
and Grand Secretary had agreed to attend and the Grand
Master of Ireland had accepted the invitation to attend as
the main speaker.

PROPOSED
NATIONAL BLOOD DONATION DRIVE |
26 October
2011 |
|
Following our
discussion at the half-yearly meeting with the Grand Master
Mason last month when we agreed to proceed with this
venture, I have had a meeting with Frances Steel of Scottish
National Blood Transfusion Service to clarify details and
agree upon the proposed strategy.
Basically, the
proposal is quite simple – that every mason, his wife or
partner and their families who wish to, and are eligible to,
donate blood at their local donor centre from now until
Christmas.
The Blood
Transfusion Service have no way to record only our
donations, so while the method of recording in your Province
is obviously a matter for you to decide, I would suggest
that each donor notifies his Lodge Secretary of who, where
and when the blood was donated. The Lodge Secretary then
collates all donations for his Lodge and informs the
Provincial Grand Secretary who then collates the total for
the Province and informs Mrs Dawn Oliff at Grand Lodge who
has kindly volunteered to collate the total for Scotland. It
would be especially useful if this were done in time for an
announcement to be made by the Grand Master Mason at the
Festival of St. Andrew on 24th November but this may not be
possible within the time period.
I have attached useful information
taken from the Blood Transfusion Services’ leaflets on the
giving of blood and a list of donor centres, dates and times
for your area but if anyone is in any doubt further
information can be obtained at the Scottish National Blood
Transfusion Service website –
www.scotblood.co.uk
Finally, I hope everyone will embrace
with enthusiasm this venture. If every Lodge in Scotland
gives 10 pints the Blood Transfusion Service will have
almost 6,500 pints to help them during the critical period
of Christmas and New Year and believe me every single drop
will be needed.
Thanking you in anticipation for your
assistance and support

CARING AND
SHARING FUND UPDATE |
1 Sept 2011 |
|
Since its
launch by PGM Bro. David A. Reid in January the 2011 PGLRE
Caring and Sharing Fund has already reached £6000 through a
range of activities by Lodges through the Province.
When the final
amount raised in the Province is announced next month it
will be augmented from the £275,000 fund made available by
the Grand Lodge of Scotland as part of the celebrations to
mark the 275th Anniversary of its founding.
It has been
decided that all six outside charities chosen by PGLRE will
benefit equally from the money raised. They are: Erskine
Hospital, Combat Stress, Breast Cancer Care, Alzheimer’s
Society, Beatson Oncology and Yorkhill Childrens’
Foundation.
A large
proportion of the money raised came from donations made by
individual Lodges during official visitations during
February through to April when the RWM of each Lodge was
presented with a hand-crafted Charity Mallet and invited to
sign a special Charity Charter. Copies of the signed
Charter were also sold to Lodges as souvenirs to raise
additional funds.

Other
activities included an evening of entertainment and dancing
held at Lodge Moorpark No.1263 in June and a sponsored walk
headed by Mrs Dawn Oliff, Homes and Charities Manager at
Grand Lodge, accompanied by substitue PGM’s Iain McPhee,
Neil Fraser and Bill Fleming, PM. Mrs Oliff also took part
in similar sponsored walks in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. On the
Aberdeen walk she was joined by the GMM Bro. Charles Iain R.
Wolrige Gordon of Esselmont and the SPGM of PGLRE, Bro. Iain
McPhee, who had also taken part in the Paisley to Bridge of
Weir sponsored walk.
PGM Bro.
David A. Reid said: “We will know the final total by next
month, but the amount already raised is a great achievement
made possible by the generosity of Lodge members who gave
both in terms of time and money to make this initiative such
a success. It has been a real opportunity to demonstrate
our willingness to support outside charities.”

PROVINCIAL's
GOT TALENT |
18 June 2011 |
|
The Charity
Evening held in the premises of Lodge Moorpark No. 1263 on
Friday 18 June in Renfrew to raise funds for the Caring and
Sharing Fund proved one thing for certain.
When it comes
to providing talented entertainers the Brethren from Lodges
within the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East are
the tops.
Where else
could you have seen The Beatles, Elvis, Robson and Jerome,
Buddy Holly and The Drifters all performing on the same
stage?
With Bro.
Robert McPherson acting a DJ for the evening first act up
were the mop-headed boys from Liverpool with John, (aka Bro.
Bert Allison, Lodge 426) George, (aka Bro. Stevie Allan,
Lodge 307 ) Paul (aka Andy Walker, friend of Lodge 426) and
Ringo (aka Bro. Gordon Campbell, Lodge 1405 ) who soon had
the hall jumping.
They
were closely followed by Robson and Jerome (aka Bro. John
Gallacher, of Lodge 1405) with a spirited rendering of some
favourite ballads.
Indeed special
mention must be made of Bro John who managed not only to
play both Robson AND Jerome, but later in the evening also
took on the part of all four of The Drifters. The ability
of Bro. Gordon Campbell to morph seamlessly from the role of
Ringo to a guitar-wielding Buddy Holly and on to the role of
a hip-swivelling Elvis also deserves a special credit.
After a
delicious buffet supper, guests were mystified and
entertained by magic tricks performed by Bro. Phil Simpson,
of Lodge Paisley St James No.1116.
One highlight
of the evening was the auction of PGM Bro. David A. Reid’s
special charity
shirt
which raised £52 and was bought by Past PGM Bro. Dixon Drye.
At the end of
the evening - which raised around £900 – PGM Bro. David A.
Reid thanked all who had attended with a special thank you
to all the artistes who had given so generously of their
time to make the evening such a success.

Lodge Greenock
St John 174 |
20 June 2011 |
|
The picture is
quite unique and shows the achievement of three Brethren who
are very well known within Masonic circles. It is believed
that it is the first time in the history of the Province of
Renfrewshire West that Brethren from the same Lodge are
holding Senior Warden
rank in a Daughter Lodge, Provincial Grand Lodge and of
Grand Lodge. Indeed it may be the first time or one of the
few times in the Scottish Craft that such an achievement has
been made. This picture was recently taken of them in their
respective regalia within the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The
Brethren are all members of Lodge Greenock St Johns No.175.

MARCUS
HUMPHREY HOUSE BARBEQUE |
5 June 2011 |
|
This year’s
annual barbeque at Marcus Humphrey House at Bridge of Weir
was voted a huge success by the dozens of residents,
relatives and friends who attended the event on Sunday, 5
June.
Guest of
honour was Bro. Marcus Humphrey of Dinnet, the former Grand
Master Mason, after whom the care home is named.
Other
distinguished guests welcomed to the event by East
Renfrewshire RWPGM and Chairman of the Friends of Marcus
Humphrey House, Bro. David A. Reid, included the RWPGM of
Renfrewshire West, Bro. James W. Miller, the RWPGM of
Dunbartonshire, Bro. Thomas K. Leckenby, the RWPGM of
Glasgow, Bro. Alistair Henderson, the RWPGM of Ayrshire,
Bro. Archie Chalmers, the RWPGM of Kilwinning, Bro. David C.
Bloomfield and the RWPGM designate of Lanarkshire Middle
Ward, Bro. Tom Davidson.
Also in
attendance were Bro. Tom C. Smith, Grand Almoner, Bro. James
Bell, Grand Treasurer, and Bro. William H. Gauld, Grand
Marshall.
The afternoon
started with a short Drumhead Service conducted by the Rev.
Robert Craig with music by the Stedfast Silver Band from
Greenock.
As guests
munched on burgers and sausages prepared by chefs Bro.
George McGaughey and Bro. Norman Carnegy and sipped wine,
fruit punch and soft drinks they were entertained by singing
from Bro. Robert McPherson not to mention appearances by
Elvis (aka Bro. Gordon Campbell) and Elton John (aka Bro.
Tommy Johnston) who were left “singing in the rain” as a
heavy shower fell.
One highlight
of the afternoon was the arrival of the group headed by Mrs
Dawn Oliff, Homes and Charities Manager at Grand Lodge who
had walked 14 miles from Paisley to raise money for the
Caring and Sharing Fund through sponsorship.
The group of
walkers – including the RWPGM of Kilwinning, Bro. David C.
Bloomfield and SPGMs of Renfrewshire East, Bro. Iain
McPhee and Bro. Neil Fraser – were piped home by Bro. Clive
Douglas of Argyll and the Isles.
There was
another memorable moment when leather-clad members of the
Masonic motorbike group, the Widows Sons, roared up to
Marcus Humphrey House to present Mrs Oliff with a £200
cheque.
"A raffle
along with other fund raising activities on the day raised
almost £1000 for Marcus Humphrey House which was opened in
1991 as a care home registered and administered by The Grand
Lodge of Scotland."
It is
registered with the Care Commission for the care of 17
residents and also has a separate registration for eight
people in Day Care.
The house is
funded by donations from Grand Lodge, by resident
contributions and from Local Authority funding.

LANDMARK
FOR LODGE DOUGLAS |
13 May 2011 |
|
Brethren at
Lodge Douglas No.1557 in East Kilbride celebrated 25 years
of ownership of their premises on Friday, May 13, with
ceremonies of Rededication and Laying of the Foundation
Stone.
The Lodge –
founded in 1958 – bought the former A.E.U. Hall in Bosfield
Place, Eastmains, in 1986 for £12,000. Two years later the
Lodge purchased the land from East Kilbride
Development Corporation for a further £500.
More than a
hundred Freemasons gathered at Douglas Hall to see a
deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire
East headed by RWPGM Bro. David A. Reid carry out the
ceremonies. Among the guests of honour was the RWPGM of
Ayrshire, Bro. Archibald Chalmers.
In his opening
remarks, the PGM - son of the late David Semple Reid, one of
the founders of Lodge Douglas, and its first ever Right
Worshipful Master – said it was a pleasure and an honour to
be present. The PGM had followed his father’s footsteps and
became RWM himself in 1985-86 when the purchase of the
premises took place.
The Brethren
adjourned outside for the Rededication Ceremony involving
the laying of corn, wine and oil on the steps of Douglas
Hall.
Back indoors
this was followed by the Laying of the Foundation Stone.
The ceremony was preceded by a short lecture by PGM Bro.
David A. Reid on the Lewis explaining its purpose as an
item of great use to both operative and speculative Masons.
As he spoke
the PGM put together a lifting device including a lewis,
pulleys, rope and a three-legged frame to demonstrate that
when all the components worked together with a little effort
a heavy stone could easily be lifted. He likened this to
the need for individual Brethren, Lodges, Provinces and
Grand Lodge to work together for the success of Freemasonry.
Following the
ceremony of the Laying of the Foundation Stone and its
consecration, PGM Bro. David Reid thanked Bro. Allan Ramsay,
PM of Lewis Lodge No.872 in the English Constitution and an
honorary member of Lodge Douglas No. 1557 for the part he
played in devising this particular concept and helping to
provide some of the apparatus.

PGLRE TRI -
ANNUAL COMMUNICATION |
18 Apr 2011 |
|
The Tri Annual
Communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire
East was held on Monday, 18th April 2011, in the
premises of Lodge St John’s Operative No.346 in Rutherglen.
Among the
distinguished guests were the RWPGM of Ayrshire, Bro.
Archibald Chalmers, and the RWPGM of Dunbartonshire, Bro.
Thomas K. Leckenby.
Opening
proceedings, the RWPGM of Renfrewshire East, Bro. David A.
Reid, reported to the assembled Brethren that his wife,
Anne, was making good progress following hospital
treatment. He also had a special word of welcome for Past
Provincial Grand Master of Renfrewshire East, Bro. Andrew
L.Tannahill now aged 95 and who was present that evening.
The business
of the evening included the proposal by PGM, Bro. David A.
Reid seconded by IPPGM, Bro. Dixon J. Drye, that DPGM, Bro.
John S. Miller be recommended to Grand Lodge as the next
Provincial Grand Master of Renfrewshire East.
Other matters
of business discussed and recommended by Provincial Grand
Committee meeting on Monday, 11th April, were
also unanimously passed.
It was
announced that more than £3000 had already been raised for
the Caring and Sharing
Fund. PGM, Bro. David A. Raid said that indications so far
showed that most Lodges favoured Beaton Oncology and
Yorkhill Childrens Foundation as the chosen charities
although he stressed that consideration will be given to
making donations to all six charities on the list.
Brethren were
reminded of various fund raising events during the summer
including the sponsored walk on Sunday, 5th June
from Paisley to Bridge of Weir to coincide with the annual
barbeque at Marcus Humphrey House and the Charity Night on
Saturday, 18th June to be held at Lodge Moorpark
No.1263 in Renfrew.
Following the
evening’s business, Lodge The Royal Stewart No.1414
performed a dramatised Degree set in the period 1425 – 1475
showing how Medieval Masons used the Seven Liberal Arts and
Sciences of Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry,
Music and Astronomy in the building of the great Gothic
Cathedrals.
PPGM Bro.
Frank Johnstone used a series of slides to illustrate some
of the building work carried out and described how symmetry
and order was brought about by the application of these arts
and sciences. He also explained the links they had with
present day ritual in Freemasonry.
RWPGM Bro.
David A. Reid thanked the Brethren from Lodge The Royal
Stewart No.1414 for accepting his invitation to perform and
said their efforts were greatly appreciated. Commenting on
the dramatisation, the RWPGM of Ayrshire, Bro. Archibald
Chalmers described it as “ thought-provoking and very
interesting.”

busy time during the summer.
Not only are
bowling greens opening for the season and golf competitions
swinging into action, but a whole series of events are
planned – ranging from a fun-filled Charity Night to the
200th Anniversary of Lodge Houston St Johnstone No.242.
Things tee-off
with the Provincial Grand Golf Section AGM on Wednesday, 27
April, at 7.30pm within the premises of Lodge Georgetown
No.1170 when final arrangements for the Major Allan and
McMenemy Trophy competitions will be made.
On Friday, 13th

Moving back to
sporting events, the Lord Blythswood bowling competition has
been arranged for Saturday, 2 July at various bowling clubs

July, at at Rutherglen Bowling Club with the semi-finals and
final at Ferguslie Bowling Club on Sunday, 21 August.
Meanwhile, on
Sunday 5 June the annual barbeque for residents, relatives
and friends at Marcus Humphrey House will be preceded by a
blister-inducing event when Mrs Dawn Oliff, Homes and
Charities Manager of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, will step
out on the 14-mile walk from Paisley to Bridge of Weir to
raise money for the Caring and Sharing Fund.
She will be
joined on the walk by SPGMs Bro. Iain McPhee and Bro.Neil
Fraser. Leaving Paisley around 9 am they hope to reach
Marcus Humphrey House in time for a well-earned burger when
the barbeque starts at 1.30pm.
PGM, Bro David
A. Reid, has already said he will donate £100 from his
Charity Fund in sponsorship of the walk and Brethren can
expect sponsor forms to be distributed around Lodges in the
near future.
Next on the
event list is the Charity Night being held as part of the
PGM’s Caring and Sharing Charity Campaign on Saturday, 18
June, at 7.30pm in the premises of Lodge Moorpark No.1263 in

THE AULD
DEGREE |
24 Feb 2011 |
|
A
demonstration of the Auld Degree by Lodge Mother Kilwinning
No.0 attracted a turn-out of 197 Brethren to Lodge Houston
St. Johnstone No.242 on the evening of Thursday, 24th
February.
Among the
guests who attended the Lodge, which is celebrating its 200th
Anniversary this year, were RWPGM Bro. David A. Reid of the
Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East, RWPGM Bro.
David C.Bloomfield of the Provincial Grand Lodge of
Kilwinning, and RWDPM Bro. John S.Miller of the Provincial
Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East.
The Lodge was
opened RWM Bro. Brian Smolarek and following lodge business
the hall was set out by the Brethren of Lodge Mother
Kilwinning No.0 to replicate the layout of a lodge room
circa1695.
Giving the
background to the Auld Degree, the RWM of Lodge Mother
Kilwinning No.0, Bro. John Duncan, explained to the
assembled Brethren that the ceremony was based mainly on
existing records with additional research by Bro. Steven
Forster, of Lodge The Kings Park No.1386.
The candle-lit
ceremony was carried out by the Degree Team of Lodge Mother
Kilwinning No.0 dressed in 17th Century costumes
complete with cocked hats, drinking from tankards of ale and
“smoking” clay pipes.
Following the
ceremony PGM Bro. David A. Reid congratulated Lodge Mother
Kilwinning No.0 for the excellent re-enactment of the Auld
Degree and praised them for their efforts in keeping the old
workings alive in the modern era.
The RWM of
Lodge Mother Kilwinning No. 0, Bro. John Duncan, later
revealed that the solid silver jewel he wore was believed to
have originally been worn by Deacons of Lodge Mother
Kilwinning in the late 17th Century. At that
time the Master of a Lodge had the title of Deacon.

reminding the Brethren that God had told Solomon that things
were going to change.
Following the
service, PGM Bro. David A. Reid thanked Pastor Bro. William
Shirlaw, Organist Bro. William McWhinnie, the congregation

To encourage participation in giving a
donation to the PGLRE Caring and Sharing Fund for 2011, each
Lodge would be asked to choose from six outside charities.
The PGM revealed that these would be: Erskine
Hospital, Combat Stress, Breast Cancer Care, Alzheimer’s
Society, Beatson Oncology,
and Yorkhill Childrens Foundation.
By the April Communication of
PGLRE it would be known which outside charities had been
chosen and by October the amount raised would be known.
Thereafter Grand Lodge will augment this from the £275,000
fund and a presentation will be made to the nominated
outside charities later in the year.
The PGM said this was an
important year for Freemasonry and a great opportunity to
demonstrate a willingness to support outside charities.
Although it was not his intention to interfere with the
existing charity arrangements of Lodges, he hoped every
effort would be made to support this initiative.
Turning to other matters, PGM
Bro. David A. Reid noted that he would demit office on 2nd
February 2012 and did not wish to be considered for
re-appointment. During the early part of March 2011
all the RWMs of the Province would be invited to a meeting
at Lodge Rutherglen Royal Arch No.116 to nominate a
successor.
The Installation of
Provincial Grand Lodge Office-Bearers was then undertaken by
Substitute Provincial Grand Master Bro. Andrew Hosie and
Substitute Provincial Grand Master Bro. Iain McPhee.
Following the ceremony PGM Bro. David A. Reid presented Bro.
John Watt with a Past Provincial Grand Warden’s Apron and
thanked him warmly for his diligent work over many years.
Provincial Organist, Bro.
Samuel Wilson; Provincial Webmaster, Bro. Gordon H Wade and
Bro. James McKay MM of Lodge Douglas No.1557 were then given
the honorary positions of Provincial Grand Organist,
Provincial Grand Librarian and Provincial Grand Architect
respectively and presented with certificates by PGM Bro.
David A. Reid who thanked them for the special skills and
effort they had contributed to the Craft.
The Harmony that followed
took on a Burns’ theme with a haggis being piped in and
addressed in the traditional way, a selection of Burns poems
being recited by Bros. Bill Fleming and Clark Leiper, piping
by Bro. George Johnstone and singing accompanied by Bro. Sam
Wilson on the organ.

Installation Rehearsal |
22 January
2011 |
|
The Elected Office-Bearers of
the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East for
2011-2012 gathered at Lodge Union and Crown No. 307 in
Barrhead on the morning Saturday, 22nd January to
carry out a rehearsal for the Annual Meeting and
Installation that will take place in a week’s time, Saturday
29th January, 2011, at the same venue starting at
2.30pm.
In remarks to the assembled
Brethren prior to the rehearsal, Provincial Grand Master,
Bro David A. Reid said that his wife, Anne, was currently
being treated for a recurrence of cancer and that
consequently some of his Masonic activities would be
curtailed.
He also revealed that an
appraisal of the way Office-Bearers carried out their roles
and responsibilities would be carried out during the year
and added that the appointment of the Director of Ceremonies
for a five-year term was under consideration. After the
five-year period this could possibly lead directly to the
position of Senior Provincial Grand Warden.
Following the rehearsal for
the Installations that will be carried out by Substitute
Provincial Grand Masters, Bro. Andrew Hosie and Bro. Iain
McPhee, Provincial Grand Master, Bro. David A. Reid,
reminded the Elected Office-Bearers of the Provincial
Syllabus for the coming year.
He drew particular attention
to the Divine Service of the PGLRE to take place in the
Cathcart Congregational Church, Garry Street, Cathcart, on
Sunday 20th February 2011. The service starting
at 3 pm will be conducted by the Paster Bro.William Shirlaw,
Provincial Grand Chaplain and Minister of this church
assisted by the Rev.Bro.John McConnell, Provincial Grand
Chaplain.
There had been a good
response from sister Provincial Grand Lodges that had had
been invited and the Brethren from Lodges throughout the
PGLRE were urged to attend in good numbers. Provincial
Grand Secretary, Bro. Evans Reid requested that Lodges
inform him as soon as possible of the names and Masonic
Ranks of those proposing to attend.

On the 1st
February 2007, I assume the duties and responsibilities

As a young mason initiated
in Lodge Douglas, East Kilbride No 1557 in December

would lie in front of me as a freemason.
However,
it is my intention to work with ALL Lodges within the
Province during the next 5 years and continue the work
of my predecessors and enhance the reputation of the
Craft in our area.
At this
time I must pay a complement to my predecessor, Bro
Dixon John Drye and wish Bro Dixon and his wife Marion
