Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire East
Farewell to Eaglesham Masonic Temple
The Brethren of Lodge Eaglesham No.1265 held a poignant final meeting in their Polnoon Street Temple on Wednesday 24th April.
It marked the end of 103-year history with the Lodge leaving the premises to amalgamate with Lodge St John Busby No.458 in their Hawthorn Street Temple later this year
The Lodge was founded in Eaglesham in 1921 in what had been a school for the daughters of local mill workers before the First World War, but had become disused.
The building was in the headlines in 1941 when the Nazi leader Rudolf Hess – having landed in fields nearby - was taken there by the Home Guard before being transferred to the Busby masonic hall and from there to Giffnock police station.
The final meeting took the form of an exemplary FC Degree appropriately conducted by a team from Lodge St John Busby headed by their RWM Bro. Stuart Wilson.
This was followed by a series of speakers sharing nostalgic memories of ceremonies and social events held in the building over the years.
RWM of Lodge Eaglesham, Bro.Ricky Wilson said: “A fall in numbers over recent years meant that sadly we had to make this difficult decision. However, we greatly look forward to joining our Brethren in Busby later in the year.”
